It was one of the most popular American manuals of domestic medicine and hygiene published in the first decades of the 19th century. James Ewell studied medicine in Alexandria and Baltimore, before buying a plantation in Virginia. His experience as a plantation owner impressed upon him the need for medical advice and information to be made available to the local people and workers, in the absence of professional aid. |
