Description Fourth edition. In the 1840s another alternative system of medicine arrived from Germany, hydrotherapy or water cure. It used no medicine at all, just water in a variety of baths, packs and wet bandages, combined with the usual temperance, diet and exercise.

Additional Information In introducing hydrotherapy to an American audience, Graeter provides a lengthy historical review of the therapeutic use of water before describing the work of Vincent Priessnitz (1790-1851) at Graefenberg. His excerpts from the writings of Munde, Oertel, Hirschel, etc. are numerous, but quoted within the context of his own narrative. 'Hydratics' appeared in four editions between 1842 and 1844.
