Additional Information Bate's marriage guide includes discussions of the male and female generative organs; the physiology of generation (he believed conception took place in the ovaries); the importance of sex to bodily and mental health; the causes of sterility; obstacles to marriage; sex disorders; gynaecological problems; venereal diseases and "intermarriage" or the ill effects of union between persons of disparate physical and emotional temperaments. The only mention of contraception is the chapter on withdrawal, in which Bate condemns the practice as having an even more deleterious effect on the male system than masturbation. Though later in the book he advertises female syringes for sale, there use is described as hygienic.
