Additional Information William Buchan studied medicine at Edinburgh, and later settled in Yorkshire where in 1759 he was appointed medical officer to the recently opened Foundling Hospital at Ackworth. Buchan was the first writer in English to combine in one book recipes for home treatment with general advice about diet, lifestyle, and how to live longer. This book was first published in Edinburgh in 1769 and in America in 1772, it was reprinted at least 142 times over a century, and adapted to changing times until "Buchan" became in effect a brand name.
