Additional Information Although Cheyne is occasionally quoted in the works of American health reformers pre-1850, this 1813 edition of his 'Essay' is the only one of his several popular treatises on health and medicine published in the United States. His books did not enjoy the transatlantic success accorded to similar works by Buchan, Cornaro, Tissot, et al. The reason may be, perhaps, that his science as well as his rhetoric were perceived as outdated. Nonetheless, there are many elements in his hygienic regimen that agree with the precepts expressed by American health reformers throughout the 19th century.
